Journey towards self discovery Part 5 - Knowing who you are

    By Lois Setoh | February 29, 2008

In Part 4, through moving to a new journey in my life, I began to discover how I respond and threw light to who I am.

Continuing on, I would like to share my journey for the week.

In every journey, there will be people who will be for you and people who will not be for you.

Having made my decision to step out of my comfort zone and start in a new environment, I have received many comments. Mind you, I have not even embarked on my first step as in physical action. There were aplenty of comments given.

Some comments were balm to the soul whereas others were like bile to the mouth. Not that the people who spoke, meant it with malice, out of their good intentions, they voiced out their thoughts and concern.

Let me share a story with you.

One day, a Father, Son and Donkey decide to embark on a journey. As they were making their way, they came across a town. When the people in the town saw the three of them walking besides each other, they commented to the Father and Son that they were silly. Instead of tiring themselves out, why not ride on the Donkey? After listening to the town folks, both Father and Son sat on the Donkey.

They continued on and soon they passed by a village. When the villagers saw both of them sitting on the Donkey, they were angry and commented that Father and Son were cruel to the Donkey. They were very heavy for the Donkey and it is not easy to carry both of them. The Father came down from the Donkey.

As they were moving on their journey, they saw a group of people. When they saw the Son sitting on the Donkey and the Father walking, they asked the Son why he was enjoying himself, sitting on the Donkey and having the Father walk. The Son came down from the Donkey and up goes the Father on the Donkey.

What insights did you gain from this little story?

Like the Father and Son, they were going for a simple journey yet at different juncture, people were giving them comments. It seemed that they did not please anybody with whatever decision they made. They listened to the comments and made adjustments. However, they were still criticized.

I received plenty of comments from well meaning friends and people around me. In the end, i find myself like the Father and Son. Finally, I decide to listen to my heart and stay true to it.

    Stay true to your heart

    When comments are rife,

    1. Remember and reflect why you did when you made the choice

    2. Be grateful for the comments given for some people care enough to speak to you

    3. Look objectively at the comments and shift through those that are relevant and helpful

    4. Continue on in your journey
